Borders.com Newsletter
Volume 2, Number 3
Week of May 31, 1999

Dear Friend of Borders.com:

Two weeks ago we told you about our decision to slash
prices on all New York Times bestsellers by 50 percent.

Clearly, you heard us. The deeper-discounted New York
Times list has proved to be enormously popular with our
customers, who are taking advantage of these bargains
to stock up on Father's Day gifts, Graduation presents,
and summer reading.

Now we've got more good news for you: our 50-percent
discount list just got even bigger and better.

50% OFF FORTHCOMING HOT SELLERS -- Beginning
immediately, we're also offering a 50-percent discount on
forthcoming and newly released titles that haven't made it
to the New York Times list yet but that our expert buyers
expect will be big sellers. You'll find books like Thomas
Harris's "Hannibal" (featuring the return of "Silence of the

Lambs" scary guy Hannibal Lecter) and the book all the
kids will be reading this summer, "Harry Potter and The
Chamber of Secrets" (J.K. Rowling's follow-up to her
phenomenally successful "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone") -- all at half off! Check out these and other
discounted titles in our special Forthcoming Books section
and save even more.

OUR BILL MURRAY INTERVIEW -- Take a moment to read
our hilarious interview with funnyman Bill Murray, who
talked with our lead book editor, Jessica, under the guise of
promoting his new best-selling homage to the golfing life,
"Cinderella Story." They didn't end up talking much about
golf, but it's safe to say that this is the only Bill Murray
interview ever to touch on Elvis, Marcel Duchamp, and a French
clown named Peluche. The mix makes for a very entertaining read.

OUR NEW MUSIC AND VIDEO COLUMNS -- We've just rolled
out two new columns this week: Maggie, our lead music
editor, will take her earphones off long enough each week to
share her eclectic tastes in a new Music section column, with
suggestions on everything from opera to funk to alternative
(with a little Celtic / country / R&B mixed in for good measure).

On the video side, Sharon will sort through the myriad videos
on the shelf to highlight intriguing new releases and shine a
light on old and new classics that you may have missed or
haven't thought about for awhile. And speaking of columns,
don't forget Stephanie's weekly dialogue on the latest in the
world of computer books.

We must be doing something right! The Dow Jones Business

you the Wall Street Journal) has rated Borders.com the

Thanks the the info and URLs. Very helpful.
What interests me is that, despite all these companies using XML in their applications, a lot of vendors are not. In my field, none of our vendors (we use different trading systems per instrument traded, almost) are even looking into this. In the Enterprise Application Intergation field (middleware), of the numerous vendors that we looked at, only one generated or used XML in their applications. We are looking into SAP Financials for the back office and G/L side (it's not ready yet) and I doubt that any of this is done in XML. If the EAI vendors and ERP vendors could use a universal framework of XML message tags then the whole middleware integration area would be easier.
I just hope these companies also catch up. For example, it's all well and good having XML support in websphere (which we use) but if we cannot leverage the tagging capability in our middleware product (which uses webshere for the intranet part) then we are missing out on a great piece of technology that can make future integration a lot easier.
