PMFBI, but I wasn't too impressed with the Gateway store. The guy that was waiting on me knew less about computers than I did, when I told him I didn't want the modem that came with the system since I had my own he said it had to come with it, they couldn't ship without it, couldn't get the latest DVD on machine, would take two weeks to ship to me, and finally, price was almost $400 bucks higher than the same(better) machine from Dell. Just one guys opinion of course.

Re: What info can you put forth that each customer CPQ loses must go
to DELL...

Every old or new Fortune 500 business account CPQ loses goes to
somebody. Dell will get a percentage... likely a large one.

As for the Gateway stores, time will show that building storefronts
so that people can walk in and order a PC over the internet is
a poor strategy. Extra overhead to sell into and compete in
the consumer market where prices and profits are declining
rapidly. They're competing with the CompUSA's of the world.
It's like Ma and Pa opening a small hardware store to compete
with Home Depot.

Since Gateway opened it's stores, Dell has grown it's revenue by
1.5 Billion while Gateway has grown it's by only 376 Million.
Does'nt look like Dell is hurtin because they have no
retail presence. Dell has instead focused on rolling out
numerous initiatives that continue to win big corporate accounts.

So in response to your question What is DELL doing about
things like this ?
I ask you, what is Gateway doing about
things like these? Opening cow stores so they can sell 1 PC
at a time to 1st time users who have to touch and feel the
thing before they can summon the confidence to plunk down $999?

Bad idea.
