Wayne, N.J. - Several high-definition-television products-including HDTV-ready sets, two integrated HDTVs and an HDTV set - top box-along with two new DVD players will be made available this summer and fall by Toshiba America Consumer Products.

With prices ranging from $2,200 to $8,500, the HDTV-ready televisions illustrate Toshiba's pledge to design for a broad range of consumers.

Steve Nickerson, Toshiba America Consumer Product's vice president of marketing, said Toshiba will provide as many HDTV choices as possible.

Toshiba's HDTV offerings include three levels of HDTV-ready products and prices ranging from full wide-screen projection televisions to 36-inch direct-view TVs.

The products also include improved analog televisions because "Toshiba doesn't believe HDTV will hurt analog [television] sales, but rather will drive sales of improved analog televisions."

Nickerson said he believes the growth of the HDTV market "will be stronger with less risk to analog sales than analysts have predicted."

At the top of Toshiba's new products is a digital high-definition set-top box that uses a DirecTV tuner and features an ATSC tuner, NTSC tuner and DirecTV tuner, advanced program guide, caller ID and ColorStream high-definition component video outputs. It will be available in the fourth quarter, and will be priced at $999. The set - top , which receives both digital terrestrial and digital satellite signals, will accept 480i (interlaced), 480P (progressive), and 720P and convert it all to 1080i.

Big screens

Toshiba's HDTVs include two fully integrated wide-screen HDTV models with built-in digital receivers. The 65-inch and 56-inch HDTV sets feature one ATSC tuner, two NTSC tuners and a DirecTV tuner. They accept 720P in addition to 480i, 480P and 1080i and convert all formats to 1080i. They will be available in September for $8,500 and $6,500, respectively.

Toshiba also debuted a new line of Cinema Series HDTV-ready TVs, including an HDTV direct-view set and three 4:3 HDTV-ready projection models.

Toshiba's new DVD players include a six-disc DVD-video changer with high-definition-compatible-digital (HDCD) processing for high-resolution CD audio playback. The SD4109 features a 10-bit, 27-MHz D/A, six-disc DVD, CDV, CD changer, ColorStream video outputs; HDCD decoding and precision filtering. The SD4109 will be available in October and will be priced at $700.

Toshiba also debuted an integrated DVD receiver that combines a DVD-video player and Dolby Digital receiver. It will be available in September and will sell for $800.
