Aus,

The post you were referencing was very self-serving and I simplified matters greatly so that they conformed to my argument.

Who doesn't:-)

Then you could use your home PC as a base and take advantage of a smaller, more portable version

This is the heart of a philosophy difference. The palmtop I use was not designed (and is not used) as a desktop companion - it is the desktop (albeit kind of small). I guess this is what I dislike the most about WinCE - any half decent platform should be able to act as either a desktop companion or a true 'no desktop needed' stand alone unit but the specs of WinCE essentially exclude the second option.

I take no offense to your rebuttal, Gary.

Well, I knew you wouldn't but there are a few new faces around here and I thought I would make it clear I wasn't trying to be offensive - just forceful!

I do, however, find that my NEC handheld offers the functionality I would seek in a laptop.

At the end of the day this is all that really matters - meeting the users needs. My problem is that this seems to have been replaced with a 'one-size fits all' approach.

Wish you were here more often to keep the discussion in line, Gary!

It's hard to save the universe and visit SI on a regular basis ;-)

The good news is that we probably agree on much more than you may think.

Oh, I know we do - especially on being long on SNDK although I don't think I'll offer my house up - I'm too conservative!

Great photos on the web - I see the site is free - how does it make money to survive? Just from the banner adverts?

If you go to garys.hplx.net the second photo will clearly show why I dislike the idea of colour palmtops. My photographs aren't as crisp as yours as I compress them a lot to keep download times short.
