( reedited)Steeny, I agree with the increase in core cpi but I think that core cpi is influenced by oil since oil is in everything. Also when I listened to his speech at that time he did say that as yet there were NO definite signs of inflation.
Greenspan is very sensitive to the fact that in the last 40 years several business cycles of bang and bust were due to premature tightening or loosening of interest rates, ( coupled with erroneous application of Keynes theories and raising taxes to achieve social engineering ends ). I think he wants to avoid that,

TA, core cpi excludes oil prices, which is why everyon was up in arms about it. You
can have the last word. I try to look at things the way the Fed does, not what I really
believe. Greenspan's recent statements inicate a shift from reactive policy to
pre-emptive. He has given the world clear warning of a hike for the reasons stated
and others. Disagree with them, but never bet against the FED.
