Marc,

Wow, that's two paranoia filled posts today Doren, perhaps you should cut back on the coffee?

To reply to Marc's comment, which was somewhat in jest, I know, but it kind of hurt my feelings, (don't worry, not much). I really love Apple computers, but they should not be above an criticism. Unfortunately although Apple does still make better computers, sometimes it seems they are trying to achieve parity with wintel computers.

My original comment was about Apple holding up ATI graphic upgrade cards to spur G3 sales. You can buy an extra card for a G3 and wintel computer users can also buy these cards but you can't buy on for a beige machine. In light of ATI's numerously delayed promises to release the cards...

Now it seems Apple has sabotaged the ability of BW machines to accept G4 upgrade chips (via a firmware update).

These tactic reek of Microsoft tactics. Instead of honest competition we are getting underhanded, monopolistic maneuvering.

Anyway I'm not the only one who thinks so, the following is from the dealmac forum:

I'm joining you guys. I'm upset with ATI for squandering all the advantages they've been
handed on a silver platter (a "friendly" relationship with Apple, endless patience from the
Mac community). I'll be looking to replace my ixMicro Ultimate Rez ($79) with one of the
Formac cards when they become available.

N.B: Although the Formac card doesn't include a TV tuner like the Rage 128 VR, it will work
with a PCI TV Tuner card (Formac is selling one, and the new ixTV FM model should work too, as
well as provide an FM radio tuner.) I currently have an ixTV and it works very well. I was
interested in switching to ATI VR, though, to gain the "external" tuner box, and reclaim one
of my (3) PCI slots.
But. . .since ATI has proven that they don't really give a damn about their customers, I'll
probably just stick with the TV card I've got, and get the Formac card.

Also note: From what I"ve seen, ATI is starting out all their cards with a REBATE program.
Well, we all (should) know what a scam that is! ATI gets to keep your money for how many
months interest free, just so you can get the card now? When and IF you receive your rebate,
then you will have paid approximately what the card it actually *worth* (take a look, though,
at the 128 prices on the PC side, and it will probably give you pause.)

Finally, should the DOJ take a look at Apple after they finish with Microsoft? As DC mentions
above, Formac can work on OpenGL support *after* Apple releases the OpenGL DDK (to others
besides ATI). But think about it. If (once) Apple releases the DDK and Formac is able to
provide OpenGL support, and if the Proformance smokes the Rage 128, who will want to buy a
Rage 128 (or pay for it in the cost of their computer?) ATI will be pissed if they end up not
selling any of their long-delayed cards to the upgrade market. Apple has given ATI a shield
during the release of the B/W G3s, and the present dearth of *available*, fast video cards is
probably (at least a partial) result.

Monopolies (and oligopolies) are no good for consumers. It doesn't matter whether they're run
by Bill Gates, or by Steve Jobs.

As I've consistantly maintained, Job's is to be distrusted. I distrust hero's. The man is ego driven. People with these kinds of ego problems frequently start out doing benevolent things, but, in order to maintain their lofty egotistical selfs, the ego pushes them into unethical behavior.

I just don't want to see this companies integrity compromised. I don't think anyone here wants short term tactics to gain importance over long term strategies.
