Carl, what you describe was also observed by a Russian economist named Nicoli Kondratiev who also threw into the equation an inflation/deflation cycle which lasted 54 years. Also known as the K-wave numerous books have been written about it over the last 15 years or so. The most prominent economist who subscribes to it (although no too loudly) is A. Gary Schilling (Forbes columnist). Interesting and well worth the time to read about it if you haven't already. Incidentally it will be interesting to see how much history attributes the current deflationary cycle to Moore's Law and its impact on society today.
