Bob,
be careful not to believe everything you read...i still say everyone will be pleasantly surprised that y2k does NOT adversely affect dell...just the opposite...q3/q4 sales will include many last minute y2k-related pc upgrades...

btw, an article in the most recent bizwk talks about the y2k fears being overblown...

in my experience, whenever there has been an issue involving the need to change/upgrade computers (and we know y2k is an issue that cannot be ignored)...vendors (such as dell in this example) benefit...in this case, right up to the last minute and then some...

i wonder on what data jim is basing his assertion that the capital-acquisition funds for y2k have dried up...

once again, common sense and experience leads me to a different conclusion...i sure wouldn't sell dell in anticipation of y2k sales slowdowns...i think all we are seeing is and i rate spooked mkt, coupled with the usually q1/q2 slowdown in the pc industry...

jmo, of course...thanks for the info, GRANOLA

Y2K slowdown:
I can't see how hardware vendors will be hit as hard as the software vendors. The Fed is making all banks test (or get proxy test results) all critical applications and OS's. This is much more complex than testing the hardware, thus, for example the ERP companies have taken a huge hit recently as implementation time is typically over a year. To buy a load of PCs is not as big of a deal than buying a new application package. We had about 50 different BIOSs in our CPQ computers that had to be tested. It would have been relatively easy to have replaced them all so that they all had the same Y2K compliant BIOS. I suspect that a lot of last minute buying will be for such a reason. However, to replace our main banking package would have been a nightmare.
BTW, one of the consulting companies doing some SAP work for us has said that sales of R3 are now picking up as the go live dates for these purchases will be Q4 2000 or Q1 2001.
