The MOMENT I found out that the list was a mistake - I retracted it and posted a double apology. I really feel bad about it now. And yet I was oh-so-deniably told to "go f* myself". This struck me in a place that hurts. And it loks like my apologies are without effect to the one person I'd most like to hear them. My real feelings about lawyers are of course quite mixed. Society cannot operate without them. They create and implement the bewilderingly complex book of rules that makes a society of hundreds of millions work out. Lawyers do great good every day and end up unsung for it. Others get splashed all over the front page for securing the acquittal of almost certain murderers and perjurers. The one time I had to use a lawyer, I got bent over so bad I can still taste the ** in my throat. But that doesn't mean that I really truly think that lawyers as a class are all sharks or even jerks. At the same time - there was nothing in that list that was meant personal or should have been. Let's play turnaround. I am an organic chemist. There aren't a lot of chemist jokes, maybe because we are a cloistered species. But think of the rap chemists carry on their shoulders every day. The proud inventors and manufacturers of mustard gas, thalidomide, DDT, PCBs, CFCs. We are the rapist-murderers of the planet. We are in collusion to every green and silver living thing on this planet. We dip baby seals in petroleum and collect a pool on how long before they finally stop writhing. But if somebody posted some of this stuff to me, sure I'd be offended. But my first line of action would be to say "Look, I don't like this. Do you really mean that sht." I would not load my first barrel with "go fck ypurself. I don't need this." That leaves a scar. And I'm not being given any reason to think it wasn't meant to.
