As I have said before on this thread, I am afraid to short any individual stock, no matter how overpriced. But I do hold LEAP puts on Schwab, which apparently some people are so confused about that they think I am shorting the stock.

Bill Fleckenstein thinks Schwab is a good short (or did, at higher levels) because it is not as volatile as Ameritrade and therefore less likely to wipe out a speculator. If you have plenty of cash to margin, the short should be profitable--though with lunatics ready to pile in using credit from whatever desperate source they can tap, there is no telling what jigs and jags could occur.

Dear "Short" Monty:

Schwab's service is the best of the online brokers -- by far -- from my experience. I've been a SCH customer and shareholder for over ten years and have checked most of their competition out.

Of course we're all entitled to our opinions but I think you can make a lot more money over the next few years owning Schwab than shorting it. It's the most innovative company in the field and isn't afraid to pour earnings back into the business.

Good luck on your other investments!
