From Reuters, on JDS/UNPH moves:Monday June 7 3:23 PM ET JDS Fitel, Uniphase Soar On Signs Of Growing Demand OTTAWA (Reuters) - Stock markets continued to shower praise on merger partners JDS FITEL Inc. and Uniphase Corp. (Nasdaq:UNPH - news) Monday, anticipating that a growing appetite for their fiber optic technology would be underscored at a major telecommunications trade show this week. Ottawa-area JDS was up C$8 to C$111.50 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. San Jose, Calif.-based Uniphase soared $10.44 on Nasdaq to $151.75. The Supercomm '99 trade show kicks off Tuesday in Atlanta and is expected to be a showcase for telecom companies launching new high-speed networks. Development of these networks signals greater demand for the fiber-optic products made by JDS and Uniphase, one analyst said. Major network manufacturer Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE:NT - news), for instance, unveiled Monday new fiber optic network gear in advance of Tuesday's show opening. ''These are areas where JDS and Uniphase are shipping most of their components,'' said Emil Savov, analyst with Goepel McDermid Inc. in Vancouver. JDS sells passive components for the networks, which boost capacity and allow fiber optic pipes to carry more traffic. Uniphase develops so-called active components, such as lasers, which push large volumes of data along the network. ''Usually at the beginning of the show, because of all the hype that's being created, the shares go up,'' said Savov. ''They will stabilize. Tomorrow we may see a little pullback because there's some momentum players.'' Nortel's announcement is ''putting some fire under things,'' said analyst Dayle Hogg, with Griffiths McBurney & Partners in Toronto. Otherwise, he points out there is no news. Shareholders for both JDS and Uniphase will vote on their $6.1 billion merger June 28. Analysts have praised the deal because the two firms have complementary products and the same customers, such as Nortel and Lucent Technologies Inc. ''There are no clouds on the horizon,'' Savov said of the firms. Regards. Steven
