You mean pay Michael a fee per box sold in order to help build the RMBS brand? As always, you are one step ahead of us. Not a bad idea at all!

It may be the case that the Rambus name appears on boxes -- I'd be the last person who would be upset about that. But I'd put the odds at under a couple percentage points. The box makers absolutely do not want to be sticking labels all over their boxes and trashing up the look. Rambus would have to pay them quite a bit to do so and the value would be questionable. I worked with one of the well-known hard drive manufacturers who tried to get a "XXXXX Inside" campaign going and it fell flatter than week-old roadkill. I believe that Intel is about the only company that has the clout to pull off the exterior label trick (and an interior label is next to meaningless). Unless Rambus is planning on developing some products that they take to the consumer directly, there's little value in getting the consumer's attention -- they want the attention of the manufacturers of all the parts. Which they have. If the motherboard manufacturers and memory manufacturers and chipset manufacturers get on board, this is a case where you then send salespeople out to the networking-product manufacturers, the HDTV manufacturers, and the cell phone manufacturers and sell them on the product. I guess what I'm saying is that the marketing function is a set of tools and not every tool has to be used in every situation. In this case, rather than pay to get the Rambus label on PCs, I'd rather see them spend that money on getting more salespeople in front of more device manufacturers. Once RDRAM starts shipping, it'll invade the PC world, just as SDRAM did (without labels).

Dave
