Nothing human is alien to me. Nothing human is unnatural. All Americans (even Native Americans) have fled something bad, often horrible, often from the very ends of the earth. Some arrived earlier than others. All of us wanted to bring over our families and friends to share and build this country. The late comers are more willing than the early arrivals. In my opinion we are gathering together the boldest and most adventurous of peoples everywhere, the most hopeful, intelligent and ambitious. We have already accomplished wonderful things. We destroyed slavery at awful cost. We established human suffrage. We established human and civil rights -- freedom of speech and religion. We helped crush three cruel and deadly empires. Many of us died to save the hope of human freedom. We have discovered vast numbers of new things. We have stopped diseases. We have walked on the moon itself, and fired messages on rockets into farflung space. We are headed for the stars. All of us from everywhere will send free people to the stars.
