The presumption that most of us have been making is that the Black Widow slaughters her stupid duped mate with malice. Not so.

I agree, not so, because I do NOT agree that we assume the Black Widow acts with malice. She acts instinctually. That is precisely what is so awful about it. She is programmed to devour her mate during The Act. What does that tell us about The Divine Programmer, if there was one?

If there IS no Divine Programmer, no problem. You can just entertain yourself seeing how many ingenious ways animals have devised to devour one another, as one scientist on a nature program I recently saw put it. If you find it entertaining, that is.

All the young male black widows know is that their elders go off on dates and there's no bragging in the locker room the next day. They are so dumb that they see the crumpled skins (she only sucks him out of the shell, she doesn't chew him up) in the web. Wow! They think. That must be the ultimate thrill. It is.
