Came accross the following news item out today Westport Innovations Inc - New fuel system developed Westport Innovations Inc WPT Shares issued 21308807 1998-01-06 close $0.95 Tuesday Jan 6 1998 Ms Sarah Greenwood reports The company's engineering team has developed a mechanism for delivering high pressure gaseous fuel to an engine in a manner that is efficient, simple, and can be delivered at a new level of price and performance. The new system includes a hydraulically actuated fuel pump designed for compressed natural gas and a variety of fuel supply management controls designed for optimization of safety, range and reliability. Using roughly 90% fewer moving parts than previous pumps, the hydraulic fuel pump takes up much less space in the crowded engine compartment. Because of its simplicity and robust design, reliability and availability are expected to be excellent. The new pump has installation flexibility, and can be configured to manage a wide variety of operating requirements. The new fuel system will be incorporated into the natural gas transit bus conversions sold to the University of California Berkeley transit fleet. In this application, the fuel system will deliver natural gas fuel to the Detroit Diesel 6V-92 engine at a constant 3,000 psi, over an operating range of 95% of the theoretical storage tank capacity (mass basis), at an energy cost of 1% or less of the engine power, over a typical duty cycle. I spent several years working in the automotive business both cars and heavy duty trucks. One thing I noticed is that Detroit Diesel is one of their corporate partners. One of the most visible polluters in North America is buses powered by Detroit Diesel engines, and almost every city bus is equipped with a Detroit Diesel engine. Through their University connection, they have been able to get the bus tested in California thus drawing the atten of the California Air Resources Board - what California does in the way of fighting pollution the rest of North America follows soon after. Add to all this that they have patents for North America and Japan applied for, and you have one heck of a nice small cap tech stock on your hands that is not market driven by market makers, but by real human need for the product.
