Rumors are abound about the merger of two large packaging companies in the U.S. A newspaper in Ireland said that it is a "Done Deal". What will this mean for the future and/or potential of these stocks. Will this be good or bad for shareholders of JJSC, STO and JS? Smurfit confirms talks with Stone Container DUBLIN, April 28 (Reuters) - Irish paper and packaging group Jefferson Smurfit Group Plc on Tuesday confirmed that its 46.5 percent-owned associate JS Corp (JJSC - news) was in discussions with U.S. packaging manufacturer Stone Container (STO - news). Smurfit said in a statement that JS Corp and Stone Container were engaged in discussions regarding ''a stock-for-stock business combination.'' It added: ''There can be no assurance that such discussions will continue or will result in any definitive agreement regarding such a business combination.'' Shares in Smurfit rose four percent on Monday to a fresh record high amid speculation about a deal in the U.S. which has been circulating in the Irish market since last week. Dealers had pinpointed Stone Container as the most likely partner in discussions. By 1240 GMT on Tuesday the stock had risen two Irish pence from the open to 255p, five pence off Monday's record high. Last week, Dermot Smurfit, the company's vice president of marketing and sales, said the situation of its U.S. unit remained ''fluid,'' but declined to go into any detail. | ||||||||||||
