Needs a thread. Information on pure plays encouraged, but anything informative is welcome.

For a definition of the subject, this from the Biomax website -

"Bioinformatics is the application of computer science to the interpretation and management of biological data.

Bioinformatics is used to:

* Identify genes from sequenced regions of DNA
* Predict protein structure and functions
* Determine metabolic pathways
* Evaluate protein sites for drug targeting
* Analyze transcription and proteomic data

Why bioinformatics?
As a result of many genome projects, both ongoing and completed, a tremendous amount of data is currently available in a number of public databases.
While sequencing projects will continue, the challenge of discovery is shifting away from the generation of new sequence data to the identification and understanding of gene products and their functions..."
