ICO global Communications (ICOGF)is building a Medium Earth Orbit
satellite communications system consisting of 10 Hughes HS601 satellites (plus two spares) to be placed in two inclined orbital planes at an altitude of 6,442 miles. There will be 12 Earth Stations. S-Band TDMA technology will be used. Launches, beginning in the second quarter of 1999 will utilize 4 Proton rockets, 2 Atlas IIAS, 5 Delta III, and one Zenit Sea Launch. ICO's system will compete with Iridium, Globalstar, and other LEO systems, but has the advantage over LEOs of higher elevation angles, and slower moving satellites, reducing the potential for hand-off problems. They will not be the first to market, but their simple system design, and cost advantage could make this stock a real winner in the long term.
