Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate Signs Stuart Hersch, Former CEO of King World and Launches Web Site
Business Wire - December 23, 1998 13:28
HONOLULU--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 23, 1998--James Walsh, Chairman and CEO of Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate Company (OTC BB:HWVI), announced today that Stuart Hersch has agreed to serve as Special Advisor to the Chairman.

His responsibilities include assisting Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, capital formation, market development, strategic partnerships, and special projects.

Hersch was the former CEO of King World responsible for its public offerings. Subsequently, he served as senior executive at Time-Warner, responsible for developing and building their Video Division.

"Hiring Stuart demonstrates our commitment to building Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate (HVC) into an international products company. We choose Stuart as the cornerstone of our operational strategy for his rare combination of proven success, management experience, and operation acumen. He helped build both King World and Time-Warner into the acknowledged leaders of their industry and we fully expect him to do the same for HVC," stated Walsh.

Hersch added, "Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate represents a one-of-a-kind opportunity to build a major consumer product company. This company has created a new market niche in the food industry by creating the only chocolate grown in the U.S.A. and the world's first Varietal chocolate. HVC is the undisputed leader of this newly emerging category. This company has the potential of becoming the King World of the food industry."

Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate is the only chocolate grown in America and the world's only Vintage chocolate. Until this year, HVC was a development stage company with biotech roots that had spent years and over eight million dollars on genetics to perfect a new cacao variety and an improved method for growing it.

HVC is well positioned to take advantage of what May's New York Times' article called "an upcoming worldwide shortage of cocoa." HVC has perfected a crop resistant to most of the diseases ravaging the world's cacao and is aggressively planting its trees with a goal of one million trees planted by year-end 1999.

Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate has maintained a twin focus of quality and purity of product. In addition to creating a new category in the chocolate industry, HVC is a leader in the fastest growing segment of the food industry -- healthy pleasure foods. A recent study by Harvard University points to the health benefits of this product by finding that men who eat chocolate live almost a year longer than those who abstain.

In 1986, Jim Walsh, founder and CEO of Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate, set out to create the world's first Varietal/Vintage chocolate. Following the model of the California wine industry, Walsh created unique Hawaiian cocoa varieties that were matched to the growing environments of Hawaii.

HVC is called varietal because, like wine, the qualities of taste are unique to the specific tree and environment in which it is grown. Its Vintage moniker stems from the fact that it is made from the crop of single year's harvest and then aged like fine wine. This combination of genetics and environment, has created a one-of-a-kind chocolate with a unique taste.

Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate launched its Web site (www.hwvi.com) in December. Walsh stated, "We have quickly become the Amazon.com of Vintage/Varietal chocolate. Our early Web Sales have exceeded all expectations. Of course it doesn't hurt that Bill Gates and Don Henley served HVC at their weddings or that the Dali Lama's first taste of chocolate was Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate.

We also have a strong following with famous chefs like Emeril LaGasse, Charlie Trotter and Stephan Pyles. Julia Child and Jacques Pepin selected it to be the featured chocolate in their upcoming PBS series 'The Finest Foods of the World.'"

Selected media reviews on HVC:

The New York Times -- "fruity aroma, silky texture, intense lingering flavor... the best in the world!"

The Chicago Tribune -- "silky, lingering... luscious texture... An American Original!"

The Atlantic Monthly -- "For the first time chocolate lovers can buy an 'all-natural' organically grown chocolate."

Newsweek -- "New type of chocolate... made like fine wines... the richness is amazing!"

Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate is a public company traded on the OTC Bulletin Board under the symbol HWVI.
