W.W. Grainger, Inc. has created a new type of e-commerce by creating a business supplies web store (OrderZone.com) featuring six different companies where one purchase order covers purchases at all six companies with only one invoice being issued. This vastly simplifies purchasing and payables for customers using this site. The web site will sell "indirect materials" that businesses buy to keep their companies operating (uniforms, tools, cleaning supplies, hardware, electronic components...the list is endless). For a copy of press release, contact Tamara Caruso at 412-402-0200. The infra-structure and software was developed by Perot Systems. Perot is leasing the equipment to Grainger. Grainger will own the web site. The other five companies will contribute to the cost of the site (Grainger will not reveal what the exact arrangement is). Grainger's Investor Relations person, Bill Chapman (847)913-8333, told me customers will not pay a fee to use the site, though the Chicago Sun-Times reported the opposite. Customers do not need software to use th site (unique according to grainger) and need only one account number to order from all the companies. The site is in testing right now. You can visit it and see the press conference announcing OrderZone.Com, which will be part of Grainger Internet Commerce, a subsidiary run by President Daniel Hamburger (847) 913-2604 or 2624. Grainger and Perot claim this is something totally new in the industrial arena, that no one else has opened a site where purchases can be made from many companies using a single purchase order. They claim this site was very difficult to create because of the many different prices negotiated by Grainger's (and the other companies) many customers. The companies at OrderZone.Com are: WW Grainger (GWW) maintenance, reapir & operating supplies Cintas (CTAS) uniforms, entrance mats, sanitation, first aid Corporate Express (CEXP) PC & office supplies, software, lots more Lab Safety Supply (no symbol) the name says it all Marshall Industries (MI) industrial electronic components VWR Scientific (VWRX) lab supplies, chemicals, equipment Each company leads its category or is among the leaders. For instance, Grainger's catalog is almost as widely distributed among businesses as is the Yellow Pages. Mr. Chapman said other companies would be asked to join the site in the future. As for the impact on these companies futures, who knows? But this certainly bodes well for Grainger and the other participants at OrderZone.Com. If E-commerce is the future, these companies are already there and should extend their leads on their rivals. I'm hoping the Silicon Investor community will be able to properly evaluate the impact of OrderZone.com. These are not flashy companies like TGLO, AMZN, EBAY, etc. They are the heart of America's industrial community. | ||||||||||||
