Focusing on the underserved small town, suburban, and rural markets, OneMain.com is acquiring 17 existing ISPs in Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, which it plans to organize into seven operating groups. The combined ISPs serve 273,000 subscribers. OneMain.com will promote dial-up and high-speed Internet access, Web hosting, e-mail, and Internet relay chat as a "Hometown Internet" service, allowing customers to use local phone numbers to connect (instead of pricier long-distance numbers).
