Union Bank of California Receives Top Rating From Leading Personal Computing Magazine; PC Computing Gives Bank@Home its Highest Rating of 5 Stars Business Wire - April 05, 1999 09:23 LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 1999--A leading consumer magazine targeted towards personal computer users has given Union Bank of California, N.A., (UBOC) a five star rating for its Bank@Home(R) online banking program. The PC Computing ranking --- which was based on access and monthly fees --- placed Bank@Home among the top for online banking products and services. "Not much razzmatazz, but Union Bank of California's home page puts you a click away from using any of its diverse financial services," stated PC Computing in its assessment of current online banking services nationwide. UBOC's website design is simple and easy to use with minimum downloading time for online services. UBOC has a history of launching banking services through the innovative use of technology. UBOC was one of the first to team with Intuit(R) and Microsoft(R) in the launch of their personal financial management software products, Quicken(R) and Microsoft Money, respectively. In 1996, UBOC joined America Online's(R) Banking Center as a charter member. UBOC also teamed with Sony last year to develop the first interactive video banking application of its kind on the West Coast. In the fall, UBOC launched its Internet banking services, Bank@Home on the Web, which allows account holders to view their balances, transfer funds and pay bills online. "Our new online capability and top-rated product is part of our innovation strategy, and supports our focus on personal service," stated Heather Robinson, vice president for UBOC's interactive markets. "Union Bank of California is determined to deliver alternative channels to make banking and investment management convenient and cost effective for our customers," Robinson added. "At the same time we continue to provide excellent personalized customer service through our Direct Banking Center, a special 'branch' for our online banking clients." Last year, UBOC announced its first "Online Bank" venture with Women.com Networks providing banking services and specialized guidance and counseling to women. UBOC also has alliances with other Internet powerhouses such as AOL(R) and Tripod. With the use of the Internet and home PCs surging, recent studies show the number of U.S. homes with personal computers accessing the Internet is at an all-time high. The new studies also point out that the industry has hit a milestone. Now, half of U.S. homes have a PC, an increase largely due to low-cost machines, better connections, and a desire to log onto the Internet. A survey from the consumer technology market research firm, Odyssey, concluded that the "home computer is rapidly eclipsing the television as the communication and information appliance for many consumers." "These advancements, together with reduced prices, have made the PC attractive to a broader range of consumer segments whom we are eager to serve," said Robinson. Based in San Francisco, UnionBanCal Corp. (Nasdaq NM:UNBC) is a bank holding company with assets of $32.3 billion at Dec. 31, l998.
