Qtera Corporation is a privately held company dedicated to the development of ultra, long reach photonic transport systems for telecommunications service providers. A prerequisite to purely photonic networking, these systems provide the lowest cost bandwidth possible by eliminating the need for optoelectronic regeneration in ultra, high capacity backbones.

Qtera was founded by five telecommunications professionals who envisioned a new optical networking model for data transmission by fully exploiting the inherent advantages of photonic technology. Optical networking has long been touted as the best solution for high capacity, multiservice infrastructures. However, today?s optical networking systems are plagued by costly optoelectronic conversion both in transmission and switching. This greatly diminishes the economic and scalability benefits of a truly optical architecture

To overcome the limitations of current optical networking systems, Qtera is developing purely photonic network solutions for both new IP based carriers and long distance carriers. The company?s ultimate mission is to build a purely photonic backbone for the optical Internet - free of scalability restrictions and spatial boundaries. Qtera?s simplified, scalable architecture will enable unparalleled performance, rapid service provisioning and restoration, and most importantly, survivable bandwidth at an extremely attractive price point.

Financing

Qtera?s vision is backed by $31.1 million in equity financing and $11.9 million in debt capital from some of the high tech industry?s leading venture firms. Qtera closed its first round of equity financing in August 1998, led by Battery Ventures . The company closed its second round of financing in April 1999, led by Mayfield Fund. Additional investors include Oak Investment Partners, Dominion Ventures, VantagePoint Venture Partners and CommVest, LLC.

Locations

Qtera?s Boca Raton headquarters are located in the heart of "Photon Beach," a growing community of high tech companies along South Florida?s Gold Coast. Qtera also has offices in the Telecom Corridor of Richardson, Texas. To date, Qtera has 100 employees.
