This thread should be helpful for those that like to trade IPOs which are about to come out of their quiet period. Many high-profile IPOs have made nice runs beginning 1 week or so before the end of their qp. Many tend to sell-off the day the qp ends in spite of the expected positive broker initiations by its underwriters. This tends to be true especially if they had a nice run the week prior to the qp ending. Another thing to keep in mind is that IPOs become shortable 30 days after they open for trading. It is, however difficult to find shares to short but this sometimes puts downside pressure on the stock for a while.
Quiet Period - A period of time extending from 30 days before to 25 days after an ipo. During this period, the SEC prohibits research recommendations, forecasts and projections of revenues, income or earning per share. However, under some circumstances, the underwriters can issue a research recommendation before the 25 day post-ipo quiet period is over.
