Datron Systems Breaks Technical Barrier to Mobile Broadband Internet Access
VISTA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 2000--Datron Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:DTSI - news) today announced it has successfully established a high speed Internet connection to a moving vehicle using one of its production model DBS-4500 In-Motion satellite television antenna systems.

Through a satellite link to a van driving at highway speeds, this connection provides full Internet capability to download large files, access Web sites, send and receive e-mail and perform other tasks normally accomplished through a home or office terminal.

The techniques used are applicable to all of Datron's mobile satellite systems, which serve business and commercial aircraft, boats, recreational vehicles, buses, vans and SUVs.

David A. Derby, chairman, president and chief executive officer, stated, ``Datron was first to provide satellite TV to a commercial airline in 1996, first to bring in-motion satellite TV to a RV, also in 1996, and first to equip a business jet with satellite TV in 1997. With the introduction of each new product, customers asked, 'Can you connect to the Internet?' As the technological market leader in the mobile satcom market, we can now say, 'Yes!'

Derby added, ``Now that Datron has broken the technical barriers to mobile Internet connections, discussions are under way with satellite service providers who should be quick to tap these unserved mobile markets. Business travelers are demanding Internet service on commercial airliners. In addition, more than one million recreational vehicles are now on U.S. roads (including over 20,000 already equipped with a Datron satellite TV reception system) and Datron now offers an attractive configuration of our land mobile products to appeal to van and SUV owners.

``As purveyors of the last mobile mile connection, we are dependent upon the service providers to drive the need for our connections. Although we can offer no assurances that a mobile Internet market will develop, we believe there is a large pent up demand for this service. We anticipate that a group of smaller competitors who have followed our lead for several years may soon enter this market. However, Datron is the only company providing systems for air, land and marine use and, as such, we expect to maintain our market leadership position,' Derby concluded.

This news release may contain ``forward-looking statements' as defined in the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. A variety of factors could cause the company's actual results to differ from the anticipated results expressed in such forward-looking statements. These include, among others, uncertainties stemming from the dependence of the company on foreign sales and on large orders from a relatively small number of customers, risks relating to the decline in the company's traditional defense business and the company's efforts to develop and market consumer products, lack of timely development or customer acceptance of new products, worldwide economic downturns and currency devaluations, restrictions imposed by the U.S. government on the export of company products, and the impact of competition. Investors are referred to the company's periodic reports under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, including without limitation the Investment Considerations set forth in the company's Annual Report on Form 10-K.

Datron Systems provides products and services addressing the needs of emerging satellite and radio communication markets.
