Limited only by Taiwan's cable TV infrastructure, GigaMedia Limited provides high-speed broadband Internet access over cable TV wires and has more than 10,500 subscribers in Taiwan. The ISP's agreements with 23 cable system operators allow it to reach about 3.4 million households and 465,000 businesses. GigaMedia also operates a Chinese language Internet portal, which offers games, news, and financial information to Taiwanese users. Shareholders of the company, which originated in 1997 as Hoshin Gigamedia Center, include Microsoft (10%) and the powerful Koos Group (75%), Taiwan's largest cable TV operator. GigaMedia and Microsoft are developing a co-branded Taiwan hub for Microsoft's MSN network.
