Survival sucks.

I know all about survival techniques because my Dad was a career NCO.

"People have died of hunger with food all around them," he'd gravely intone, "because of food aversions. They found snakes or lizards or lichen too ugly or difficult to eat."

He was good at preparing me for life after a crash landing on a desert isle. But the probability of real life occurring first played havoc with his well-intentioned advice. I know how to eat everything. What I need now is a barge and crane to move my massive 1,300 pound body.

No man was an island... till now.

Life has gone like that since, too. I'm always picking up fresh survival skills. I've juggled bills, bounced back from a house fire, a divorce and other losses, been a jack of more trades than the AFL-CIO represents, played the float on checks, lived in a car... when it comes to surviving, I didn't write the book, but used its pages as kindling for my snake & lichen souffle.

I'm sick of survival. From now on, I intend to learn techniques to live opulently or die in fascinating ways. Which is why I set up this thread.

Either you have a story of your own or have a link to an article written by another. Use one of these two criteria to determine if it belongs here:

-1) Does it offer something informative and amusing for the idle rich?

-2) Will it teach me to die happily?

I can't define it any simpler than that. Give me wealth or give me death. Just don't bore me into mere survival.
