Vesper is a Brazilian telecommunications company. In trying to "dig up" some coherent explanation of just what exactly Vesper is ... I have been amazed how little readily available information is "out there." Qualcomm and VeloCom are both heavily involved with Vesper. (And, Qualcomm is a part owner of VeloCom). From a 1/10/01 news release : "Denver-based VeloCom is a provider of competitive voice, data and Internet services in key markets in Latin America. In Brazil, VeloCom operates under the brand name Vésper, and in conjunction with partners QUALCOMM Incorporated and Bell Canada International, offers wireless voice and data transmission services in two Brazilian regions that include the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo." This is from a 1/28/00 news release on Vesper : The two Vesper companies are facilities-based communications providers with licenses to offer voice, data transport and Internet access services in direct competition with two incumbent telecom carriers in Brazil. The Vesper operations, however, have no tariff restrictions or universal coverage requirements, and have exclusive access to the fixed-wireless spectrum. VeloCom Inc, Bell Canada International Inc and QUALCOMM Inc. are shareholders in the two companies, with BCI acting as the operating partner. Both of these news releases may be sufficiently "out of date" to be somewhat useless. Recent news : Vesper may end up being owned 100% (or, at least, more than 50% owned) by Qualcomm soon. Because ... Qualcomm stated in their 11/06/01 earnings conference call that Vesper's funding difficulties may be resolved by Qualcomm converting its status as a large creditor of Vesper into being a controlling shareholder of Vesper. Also, Qualcomm stated (during the same conference call) that Vesper shares may end up being spun off to Qualcomm shareholders (as were Leap Wireless shares, back in 1998). | ||||||||||||
