There have been a few high-profile bankruptcies lately, and likely more to come. How does the bankruptcy of one company affect the rest of the industry?

For example if Nortel goes under, Lucent would likely benefit. But on the other hand, Enron's collapse was bad for other energy traders. And Laidlaw's bankruptcy had little effect on the transportation industry, because their buses kept running.

Earlier in history, large bankruptcies have brought down banks. But sometimes creditors benefit, if they gain ownership of a business that can be rehabilitated.

Another topic for discussion here is what companies may go bankrupt in future. Also occasionally companies re-emerge from bankruptcy, and this may lead to buying opportunities.

This thread is non-moderated. Anybody say anything they want; I am not going to try to lead the discussion.
