At Hambrecht & Quist Technology Conference HAMBRECHT & QUIST TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE, SAN FRANCISCO, May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- General Scanning, Inc. is a presenter at the 1996 Hambrecht & Quist 24th Annual Technology Conference: General Scanning, Inc. Core Technology: High speed micropositioning and precise power control of lasers are used in a wide range applications in several fields. Expertise includes mechanics, optics, magnetics, electronics, software and process systems design and integration. These are combined to accomplish the complex task of rapidly and accurately positioning and controlling laser energy to perform high precision work, frequently at micron scale. Applications -- computer memory processing systems used in the fabrication of high density DRAMs, SRAMs and ASICs; -- thin film resistor processing systems used in the production of automotive pressure sensors for airbags, anti-lock brakes, emissions control, active suspension systems and airflow measurement; -- thick film resistor processing systems used in the fabrication of surface mount ("SMT") electronic components for use in consumer electronics; -- laser marking systems used for permanent identification of products such as microelectronic packages, industrial components, tools and medical implants; -- precision alignment systems used primarily in the fabrication of aircraft composite structures; - imaging subsystems used principally in graphics and medical diagnostics; -- optical scanners, subsystems and components used by the Company and other companies in a variety of applications including materials processing, test and measurement, alignment, inspection, displays, graphics, vision systems, rapid prototyping of CAD parts and medical applications; -- thermal printers used in medical instruments for critical patient care applications as defibrillators, patient care monitoring systems and cardiac pacemaker programming. Operations Primary markets for the Company's products are the semiconductor, electronics, medical and aircraft industries. General Scanning sells its products primarily through a direct sales and customer support organization which is supplemented by independent sales representatives in selected geographical areas. The Company has direct sales offices in seven countries, in addition to six cities in the United States. The Company's 1995 sales were $102 million, a 34% increase over 1994. International sales, as a percentage of total sales, have increased from 28% in 1992 to 50% in 1995. The Company has over 1,000 active customers. No single customer accounted for more than 6% of total sales in 1995. Sales for the first quarter ended March 30, 1996 were $32.5 million, and net income after tax more than doubled to $2.4 million, or $.22 per share. Backlog increased to $47 million compared to $39 million at the end of 1995. The Company is headquartered in Watertown, Massachusetts and has additional engineering, manufacturing and distribution facilities in Arlington, Bedford and Somerville, Massachusetts.
