Azure Dynamics (T.AZD or AZDDF on the pink sheets) is a neat little pure play hybrid electric drive company. They're working to develop a niche market for medium-size trucks, typically delivery trucks, buses, shuttles, and so forth, that are used all day and operated as fleets. Azure has shown a 35-50% fuel savings with their drives. We don't know the life span or reliability of these drives.
Nevertheless, if they keep them simple, they should be pretty reliable.
Given the dramatic increase in oil consumption by India, China, and other developing countries, the decrease in new oil discoveries, and the ongoing strife in the Middle East, I think automotive hybrid systems to save on fuel will have an economic benefit that will drive (har) their adoption by large fleet owners.
Competition includes big companies such as Eaton, and very small companies such as Enova Systems (who are partnered with Hyundai).
Personally, I expect Azure to be bought out by a larger company, but we might get lucky and if management and the drives are both exceptional, they could grow independently and make their shareholder very happy indeed.
