We all know that software industry is going thro a paradigm shift(from
Procedural Programming to Object Oriented Programming). And this will have a direct implication in the Database industry. Today it is predominantly relational in nature. As objects become talk of everyday in Software industry and the same will become true for Database industry. Before you know RDBMS will become the thing of the past. But there is a huge investment in RDBMS today. So those who have made huge investment in RDBMS may want to have an Object interface for the existing RDBMS. So todays RDBMS vendors are busy working on providing an Object interface to the RDBMS. That itself is a proof for a vibrant Object Database industry.

The real debate is who is going to Win?

Today We have three major players in RDBMS:
Oracle, informix and Sybase.

And two major players seem to evolving in ODBMS:
Versant and Object Design.
