RoamAD is an unlisted startup New Zealand company, which has developed technology to enable metropolitan areas to be covered with Wi-Fi 802.11b [and upgrades] to give internet access without disconnection while enjoying high data rates at low cost.
I've used it. It works. I also bought shares in the company.

QUALCOMM genuflects to Wi-Fi by including 802.11b in their technology: Message 18112728
Lucent is also working on it. They've got a swanky new handoff system between 802.11b and cdma2000 1xEV-DO. Message 18111197
Wi-Fi devices are getting really cheap [I bought a couple of PCMCIA cards for US$100 recently, including SIM slot built in]. But 1xRTT cards are still horrendously expensive and data prices of $3 a megabyte are absurd; that's with a slow data rate.
