Amy, >>>RE: "Maybe we can convince server manufacturers that they need pairs of processors to detect errors, or even triples to allow voting instead of shutdown..."
Great idea. <<<

Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but I see parallels with Xeon success in the market and Merced followup with when Windows 3.0 came out in the late 1980's.

When Windows 3.0 came out (even though it didn't work that well)), it signalled Microsofts intentions in the WIMP (Windows, Icon, Mouse, Pulldown menues) market, it was all over for Apple and Wintel was going to dominate. In the same way, when Xeon came out (signalling Intels intentions in the highend market) it spells the end for all the other companies in the Workstation, Server, and Fault Tolerant markets.

IMO there is inevitabilility and that IA64 is unstoppable (Tony's RASmataz schtick not withstanding).

Whenever the investment community recognizes this possibility (or reality), Intel share prices are going to soar again.

Mary

Keep in mind that hardware RAS is only HALF the story. IBM has the complete package because of operating systems that can run for months and months without crashing (MVS - Hi Mary C!!! <ggg>). Any manufacturer wanting to sell higher and higher up into the enterprise will have to provide systems that have both hardware and software RAS. Unfortunately for Intel, they are at the mercy of Microsoft for the software piece...

John
