But the real point is that Conrad set out to produce literature, not formula
fiction.

A distinction which also applies to Dorothy Sayers in her Lord Peter Whimsey series. She was a well recognized scholar who, legend has it, was challenged to write a detective story which was also good literature.

If you haven't read any of her stuff, you have a treat in store.

Am curious to hear what you all have to say about Brave New World as Ammo has to read it this summer for AP English.

Another known "intellectual" writer who wrote under a pseudonym because her college would have condemned her for writing commercially is Carolyn Heilbrun, who wrote as Amanda Cross.

I'm currently reading Elegy for Iris by John Bayley, Iris Murdoch's husband. His descriptions of her early in their love affair are jarringly coupled with her today as an Alzheimer's victim.
Talk about extremes.
