They publically and clearly blamed the outages on SUNW. If this was not true SUNW would have publically stated the real reason or possibly sued them.

James, this is just another selective half-truth. Today, last time I checked, was June 22. You quote a nice vintage story from June 14. Here's one from the 18th.

news.com

Pursglove said that the problem "manifested itself" with software from Sun Microsystems, but was careful to say that the company is not blaming Sun for the outages. He said the company is exploring several possible causes and plans to meet with Sun and Oracle to discuss the outages.

Ebay blamed Sun in early releases and then backed off of that quickly.

And you think Sun would sue, or even publicly quarrel with, a major customer over something said during a crisis, even if the statement was false, as it was here? You may be a propeller head but you're not a business strategist.

Give me a break.

Systems go down for all sorts of reasons - most of them dont have a lot to do with HW/SW but to do with the processes in place - like installing system patches on a regular basis or having a mirrored site/disaster recovery plan which could have helped. This requires a lot of expertise and cost which startup businesses may not invest in since their #1 goal is growth at all costs. this is a challenge for everyone not just ebay - their just the most visible example of this. What i think is more remarkable is that a company which didnt exist two years ago is using Sun's biggest mainframe class boxes to run its business.
