Diamond is a dog. Diamond may have come cheap for S3, but they'll still have to buy a flea collar (restructure).

"I agree. And when that happens, nvidia will be taken over, or will pick who she'll dance with."

I had taked to a local peripherial distributor earlier this year, and he briefly mentioned they spoke with nvidia about distributing bulk packs of the cards. I don't know if anything happened with that, or if any further move has been made by nvidia, but that's interesting info.

S3/Diamond still claim they will continue to buy nVidia chips and sell S3 chips to other board makers.

"As opposed to 3dfx's approach, S3 expects to continue business as usual for both S3's and Diamond's customer base." (From the Adrenaline Vault interview.

It will be an interesting situation when S3's customers start to undercut them at retail - or vice versa for that matter. The difference between S3 & 3dfx's strategies for their graphics business hinges on the fact that 3dfx have a top chip, IMO.

S3 want diversification and don't appear to be trying to beat 3dfx or nVidia. If they wanted to shoot for the top of the graphics market they should have bought nVidia, Matrox or even 3dfx.
