Then why have them at all? The judge knows more about the law than any jury.

I've been on several juries and to some extent I have to agree with you. The experience was a farce. The civil courts function much better (after all it's money and not law at stake). The juries should be much better informed, they should do the principal questioning of witnesses. I wouldn't want a sweeping sudden reform, just some steady progress with the ability to back up and modify when problems are found.
