More on the Justice probe...

The probe appears to be centered on the construction of a $1.2 billion trans-Pacific cable between the United States and Japan, which is being undertaken by a consortium made up of more than 30 members, including AT&T, Sprint, MCI WorldCom, Level 3 Communications and three major Japanese telecommunications firms.

The trans-Pacific cable has been criticized by Global Crossing, which has seen efforts to garner customers for its own trans-Pacific cable hindered. Global Crossing has complained that since the Japanese members of the consortium control prices of transmissions within Japan, potential customers are loathe to sign up with a competing cable....
