I can guarantee I will go. January is awfully wet there. You might want to consider Mar-Apr.

one night at least at the volcano house on the Big Island up near the active volcano...I forget its name ...it is I think Kiluaa...from there it is a short hike down into the crater of this pretty much dead but not completely dead crater and all the way across passing steam vent after steam vent and up the other side to "Devastation Trail"...here once was a forest but now just dead limbs of trees sticking up through the lava...really eire and then gradually out into a lush rain forest and a short hike up to Thurston Lava Tube where for about 1000 feet or so you walk under ground in this tunnel which was carved out by an ancient flow......once of the coolest hikes I have ever taken...hotels on Maui my favorite is the Wailea Grande....has the coolest pool I have ever seen.....looks like a natural Hawaii mountain pond with runnig streams into it...has giant slides.... a volcano elevator thing which fills with water instead of lava....cave bar...lazy river....ropes to jump off... real beach in pool... *

Carolyn, I can help you with that one, I've been to Maui many times and can tell you about the different resorts there. The Ritz in Kapalua is very nice, service, rooms etc. are all nice however many rooms do not face the ocean.
Kapaula is windy at times, more so than other parts of the island. North of the Ritz on a cliff over looking the ocean are many prayer stones. Some of them I placed to help fight MRS. BLUE's battle, so it is a special part of the island to me.
There are several resorts, hotels close by in Kaanapali. The Sheraton, Kaanapli Beach Hotel, The Whaler, Westin, Kaanapali Alli, Marriot and Hyatt Regency (all are nice some more so than others). The beach is first rate by the Sheraton. The dive off Black Rock is great. I have photos of many of the fish and turtles that hang out there.
Lahaina is close by and a great town to shop in if you like art. I've hung out with several of the artist who have galleries there. Nice people and it "sells". Last time I was there I hung out with David Lee and then met a really cool guy who was there to show his work.
He is in a class of his own, a visionary master, his work is called surrealistic art but that doesn't fit his work. Dario Campanile is his name and I'm telling you, this man will be remembered as one of the greats. MRS. BLUE thought he was "cute". Yeah.
He has a gallery in Newport Beach and San Francisco (800-788-5008). I met him at the Lahaina Galleries on Wainee St. Their web site is www.lahainagalleries.com
Lahaina also has a harbor for us people who like to fish. Joe is right, Maui has a little of all the islands.
