The truth is that it is easy to be civilized when one has all the comforts and all the basic necessities of life. When it IS hard to put the veneer over the volcano is when basic requirements are lacking. That is when you see what people are really made of.

Well, I can tell you, Blue, that I would go wild if I had to live that kind of life!!! <gg>

Quite seriously, Freud's scheme does not fit everything. But it is provocative, and certainly provides one plausible answer to some frequently asked questions. Take, for example, this question: "How is it that the Germans, of all people, the people who produced Bach, Beethoven, Goethe, Schiller, etc., etc., also produced Nazism and descended into such barbarism?"

Another thing is important. Our own society gives us many escape valves. There is no single repressive one-size-fits-all cultural stereotype that everyone is expected to conform to. If you don't like the culture you are in, you can always find a "counter-culture," or create your own. Some folks don't like that -- hence all the wailing over our "lost values," etc., etc.

I love it.

Joan
