That was really diplomatic of you!!! I bet you wanted to laugh.
The SCHOLARLY one. Maybe there's some guy out there named David Scholarly, PhD, and we'll have to eat our superior sniggles.
I think the one I have somewhere is by Lattimore (sp?)it's in verse, but not bad. Fagles is pretty modern- he's the one Ammo used his freshmen year- I think---a Penguin classic?
I think it's great that they are emphasizing the classics. I don't care how Un-PC that makes me.

I haven't had a chance to read Fagles' translation (which has an excellent reputation). I generally steer people towards Lattimore, which (by a funny coincidence) my 14 year old asked to borrow so he could read it. I'll ask him how he's getting on.

When I was a teenager I used to frequent an excellent used bookstore in upstate NY, which is still there, run by a very proper and well educated British woman married to a large and well spoken black man, Jamaican I believe. They had a superb "old books" section, and once while browsing in it I discovered a fascinating edition of The Odyssey. It was a student's book, bilingual. The easy side was in Latin, the difficult side in Greek. It was published in London, in 1644, and was still in useable, if somewhat battered, condition. She wanted $75 for it, which at that time was a fortune to me, but I wish I'd bought it. I wonder who did.
