cybersurf... news.. CALLNET makes investment July 20, 1999 Call-Net invests in Cybersurf Corp. CALGARY (CP) -- Call-Net Enterprises Inc. is investing $12 million into Calgary software company Cybersurf Corp., hoping to speed up development of the company's specialized Internet services across Canada. Call-Net, parent of long-distance company Sprint Canada, will inject $12 million cash -- of which $7 million will be used by Cybersurf to pay for Call-Net wholesale telecom network services. In return, Call-Net will get more than 1.7 million Cybersurf shares, plus warrants to buy a further seven million shares at $5 each over the next three years. Call-Net will also become the national supplier of network services to Cybersurf and will appoint two members to Cybersurf's board. "Our partnership will ensure that Cybersurf expands its leadership position in the advertiser-supported Internet access market in Canada," said Juri Koor, Call-Net's chief executive. "This investment allows our company to take a further step in implementing its own Internet strategy. We will be leveraging Canada's largest IP network with this country's most exciting Internet innovator." Call-Net said Cybersurf has opened a new market segment trough its 3web Internet portal, which the company claims offers users a powerful and secure portal to anywhere on the World Wide Web, as well as e-mail and e-commerce. Traditional portals provide advertising via banner ads on Web pages, making it easy to click the ad away. However, 3web's portal operates independently of any Web browser and can never be hidden or disabled, the company said. "It is because of this feature that advertisers on 3web can be guaranteed exact impressions and can target specific demographic profiles." Paul Mercia, Cybersurf's president and chief executive, said his company has successfuly used its key product in Calgary and Edmonton, showing the strong potential of expanding advertiser-supported Internet access Canada. "Call-Net's financial and operational support will play key roles in spearheading the successful rollout of the 3web Network on a national basis," Mercia said. Koor added: "We see this partnership as a two-way street. Beyond the financial and business support we bring to Cybersurf, we believe there is also an opportunity to bring Cybersurf's web design, web hosting, firewall and e-commerce capabilities to Sprint Canada's small and medium-sized customer base and lead the industry in e-commerce enablement in this segment." Call-Net shares rose 10 cents to $9.05 on the Toronto stock market Tuesday. Do you have an opinion about one of our stories? Know someone who might be interested in this page?
