I've been resigned to the cold-steel look for several days. One result I didn't expect, though, is that it makes the page flatter. On a stock message, there's now a great deal of gray competing with the gray block of the message. The message no longer seems to pop out as well, but, again... it's one of those things one must give up for design democracy.

The one thing I really like about the changes is the "More Info:" column moved to the bottom of the (unfortunately) enlarged stock info table. I can now keep my browser window set to just over 640 px without getting a horizontal scroll bar.

(By the way... you've probably noticed this, but there's a vestigial column defined for the old "More info" space. It appears at the right edge as a thin light gray blob.)

Also like the ÿ on the SubjectMarks new message column. It makes that " 1" a bit wider.

Bryan, one thing that will make this beta site better, is the use of a complete color screen like on the "edit message", "post message" and private message" screen.

When the entire page turns color, you know that you are not in the public view.

In the production SI, I can limit a search to "This Subject Only". In the beta, this feature is not available. Will it be?

Thanks,

John

Hello everyone - I am posting this message on a couple of threads to outline Go2Net's advertising policy with respect to Silicon Investor. I can hear some of you muttering right now, "Oh boy, here it comes." However, please read this entire post, and hopefully you won't still feel that way at the end.

For starters, to clarify how and where advertising will be displayed within the new Silicon Investor, we have prepared a Silicon Investor Advertising Policy, which you can view - in full gory detail - at your leisure, at the following address:

beta.siliconinvestor.com

As a brief review, let me summarize the key components for Paying Members, which includes active paying members as well as lifetime and "grandfathered" members.

The bottom line, Go2Net will start placing Ad Banners and Ad Buttons throughout the Silicon Investor site,

...but...

Paying Members will be able to turn-off the advertising within the StockTalk Member Section of SI, which is the core discussion area (i.e. forums, subjects, posts, message center, etc.) And yes, we will default this option to *advertising off* for all existing Paying Members. To change this setting, go to the Customize Options page.

Paying Members will not be able to turn off ads in the other sections of Silicon Investor. As we continue to expand SI into a comprehensive financial destination site, we will add or enhance services and content (quotes, news, charts, research, advice, editorial, etc.) that can only be provided economically on an advertising-subsidized basis, i.e. as it is elsewhere on the Web.

We believe that this policy is fair and equitable to all, and that it is consistent with the covenant made with SI members. If you have questions or comments about this policy, please let us know - (like I needed to remind you to share your opinions <g>).

Thanks,

Bryan

PS: Please help spread the word.

Bryan,

Yea, the olive barf color is gone!

You guys did that on purpose, right? Picked the ugliest color around, so that we'd be so happy it's gone we wouldn't care what the alternative is. It worked!

Gray is much better.
