Lu Xun, your anecdotal evidence is quite valid and valuable, IMO. Most investors and pundits form their conclusions on their personal experience. Many G* critics, it seems to me, don't have much experience outside the wired and cell wombs of US cities and W. Europe. They chauvinistically conclude that everyone that could afford cellular coverage already has it. This has provided a buying opportunity for the rest of us.

G* wonks like myself and many other esteemed contributors to this board long since took advantage of the buying opportunity and now focus (somewhat obsessively, perhaps) on the details of implementing the plan.

The Philippines would be an excellent market......but there is no gateway to service them. Save your money on that phone for now! As a matter of fact, I don't even see a service provider listed for the Philippines, and coverage maps cut it in half. It appears Luzon would be covered by a China gateway, if they'd let anyone but Chinese use it.

Maurice, are you listening? NZ may not be the place for a gateway, but maybe the Philippines is the spot!

You may see a lot of "town" G* phones; phone booths or in the local tavern or store, used by the entire town. G* does have a phone booth or "public" phone on the drawing board doesn't it?
