EXCELLENT PREPARATION LINKS SITE: UPDATED DAILY WITH NEW ONES. I RECOMMEND BOOKMARKING.
<<
Most of these entries were posted originally under the Domino Effect category. As more and more of these postings had to do with personal preparations, I decided to create a separate category.

In the first two months of 1999, there was a flurry of interest in survivalism, and supplies immediately got short. Some items were back ordered for months. In March, the public's mood changed. Demand dropped. Producers were able to catch up with demand. This has given y2k-aware people an opportunity to buy what they need.

Less than 1% of the 100 million households in the United States can jam up the phone lines for most of these cottage industry products and services. Time is precious. Don't waste it.

There will be a shortage of competent workers to help you finish your plans later in 1999. Hire them while you can.

Y2K repair leaves cash machines on the blink

<< A software glitch rattled up to 5 percent of the nation's automated teller machines for more than two weeks earlier this month. The glitch resulted in failed machines, slow transactions and incorrect bank balances for tens of thousands of ATM transactions.

The mistakes occurred after a little-known Texas company in late June finished installing a new computer system designed to process ATM transactions properly in the year 2000. >>

There are thousands, probably millions, of different "systems", each with tremendous redundancy, not one overall system. Take water and sewage treatment, which seems to be a big focus for you.

There are 171,000 different water supply systems in the U.S., each with varying degrees of Y2K readiness. A large percentage of them are gravity fed, with mechanical, not embedded system controls, and the ability to conduct treatment manually, if necessary. The water supply and treatment industry is taking this issue extremely seriously and I would bet you right now that there will not be a single long-term outage of water in the U.S. because of Y2K. And even if there were, it would not affect anyone but those who are on that particular system, because there is no overall system for water supply, there are 171,000 different systems in the U.S.

Half the people in the U.S. do not even connect to a wastewater sewage treatment facility. They are on septic tanks and have absolutely nothing to worry about for Y2K impact on sewage treatment.

Tell me why anyone in Seattle should worry about water supply in January. This from the Seattle Public Utilities web site. They also have outside auditing of their readiness:

"When you turn on your tap, you will receive the high-quality water you expect. The water supply system is fundamentally low-tech, since it is primarily gravity-fed; there is lower water usage during the winter season and a corresponding higher seasonal supply. However, to eliminate any Y2K impact on water distribution and treatment, SPU has reviewed every computer system for date functionality and is fixing or replacing any related system that has a possible Y2K problem, including implementing a new laboratory information management system. All embedded systems—including those that monitor water treatment equipment—have also been examined. (Pumps and valves can be monitored and operated manually, if necessary.) And, to add an extra layer of assurance, SPU is rescheduling reservoir maintenance, filling reservoirs before Jan. 1, 2000 and reviewing "on-call" staffing levels."
