On mass average it is clear that lack of ability to meet the demand is the reason for the low penetration rate. As I understand it there are still many areas where there are long lines of people waiting for installation.

Can anyone confirm this with personal experience?

However the fact that there are areas that seem to be having trouble is worrysome. Everytime I see @home putting out incentives like $0 installation free or free AOL I think it is a bad sign. Similarly if they were forced to reduce the price to increase subscriptions I would also consider that a bad sign.

I suspect that at least an equal part of the reason Fremont has done relatively poorly (assuming Jing's statistics are right) is the well known and highly publicised network problems they were having there. Who wants to pay extra $ to be a part of that?

Dont forget however that broadband is color TV to dial up black & white. Dial up is doomed, its only a question of how long it takes.

I believe that the market was Portland, Oregon not Portland, Maine.
