Briefing.com: Book-To-Bill : Semiconductor Equipment book-to-bill ratio posted at 1.11, down from June's 1.21 and May's 1.24.

Slowing trend was confirmed by Applied Material's (AMAT) weaker-than-expected backlog.

Wall Street analysts on the horn this morning warning that book-to-bill should continue to slow over next few months.

Seeing very little reaction in leading names such as AMAT and Novellus (NVLS). Both stocks flat, in 3rd-market trading.

Hitachi to Start Full-Scale Production of 256Mb DRAMs
August 20, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Hitachi Ltd. will start full-scale production of 256Mb DRAMs to become a leading maker of DRAMs with large storage capacities.

The company will increase the production capacity of its Naka plant in Ibaraki prefecture, which is now producing a small quantity of DRAMs, along with the mass production of these products at Singapore-based Hitachi Nippon Steel Semiconductor Singapore Ltd. slated to start from the spring of 2000.

Hitachi's output of 256Mb DRAMs will reach 1.4 million units a month in March 2000. And it will raise production further by the end of 2000.

Hitachi will use 40 billion yen worth of capital appropriated in its fiscal 1999 budget for the investment in Hitachi Nippon Steel Semiconductor Singapore.

The company will use a 0.2-micron design rule and a 0.18-micron design rule for its 256Mb DRAMs.

As for large AND-flash memories, Hitachi also plans to mass produce 500,000 units of 64Mb microchips and the same number of 256Mb microchips a month.

Ian, re >>Thanks for adding some mathematical precision
to the amount of the revisions in orders and shipments on a month to month basis.
<<

I resemble that remark.
I detest unnecessary precision in stock data
and even dropped the digits to the right of
the decimal point. :)

Maybe you can illuminate your source of optimism
with respect to stock price for us. Since price
mostly
follows orders, do you expect a 1995-like
trend? [orders went flat for a few months to resume
their uptrend later]. Note that AMAT price then
continued to decline, even with rising orders.
