Eric L: Yes the spanner in the works (note Maurice language) - OK the monkeywrench - was the Vodaphone raid on the Bell Atlantic/Air Touch merger. Hope that Vodaphone and Bell Atlantic can work out a sensible arrangement. Hey if the Q and Ericsson could, why not?

Also the FCC raid on the bankrupty court settlement re Nextwave is bad bad news. Bound to delay and maybe kill a timely CDMA data roll out of wholesale data supply in the US. Amazing the FCC can throw its monkeywrench in and apparantly get away with it, since the plan seems to be to punish Nextwave for FCC's own staff incompetence. Terrible, but such is life these days. Chaz

As Jack Kennedy said,"life is not always fair" or somesuch phrase. But we play the hand we are dealt, no?

They are achieving worldwide interoperability quickly. CDMA does not offer this yet. Hopefully the Vodaphone acquisition of Airtouch (& maybe BAM) will change this.

Neither CDMA or GSM offers worldwide interoperability, neither are even close. Worldwide interoperability was a dream that GSM IPR holders had until Qualcomm's technology displaced this dream. 99% of cellular phones seldom leave their home service area (my obsevation). Phone rentals, call forwarding and other developments are making interoperability a mute point, or at best a minor consideration for 99% of all subscribers.
