My AOL "Peter Lynch" moment:

I've always disliked AOL the product, as much as I've admired AOL the stock.

I been a satisfied ATHM customer for a couple of years. Recently, I took a one-month AOL free trial (actually my daughter signed up for it and I grudingly let her). The one free month stretched into one paid month, and then I decided to cancel the deal.

(I've also always HATED the fact the AOL will not let you cancel your account online! How absurd is that? You must call or WRITE. Hah! Well, maybe it does make business sense. They make it simple to subscribe, and very difficult to un-subscribe.)

Anyway, so I called the 800 number to cancel my subscription, and talked to this incredibly nice, friendly fellow who informed me that ATHM would pay for my AOL account free up until January 2000.

So, I said, sure, why not.

Doesn't seem like AOL will be making much money on me in the next few months, unless it is the extra eyeball I provide to their advertisers.

Don't know if this provides any insight into the direction of AOL the stock. But that's my two-bits worth of Peter Lynch insight.

On the Sun/AOL/Star Division possibility.

Roy, you've hit it right on the nose. Free everything. Free box from eMachines, free OS with Linux, free word processor, spreadsheet & database--all on line--with Star's software and AOL can package the entire deal with xDSL and give it away to attract business customers with internet access and data storage. Call it "AOL Office Anywhere" or "NetCenter Business Solutions" or something like that. This not only aims directly at Microsoft's license by license sales approach, it aims at Intel. You don't need faster and better when dumb and on-line will do the job. The business possibilities here are--well, I don't want to be too enthusiastic, so I'll just say enormous.
